Information for Summer Camp

Full information for Camp

Wellington Branch Committee is delighted to invite families to register for the upcoming Cello, Piano, Viola and Violin Camp. Places fill fast; so enrol early! No late registrations accepted. Payment is due on enrolment.

Our Summer Camp this year will again be at Rathkeale College, a short drive from the centre of Masterton. It is in a beautiful rural setting, has a huge auditorium, large dining room, common rooms for families to socialise, a swimming pool, tennis courts, and LOTS of room for biking around.

Each registered Cello, Piano, Viola and Violin student is allocated a masterclass, group lesson and string ensemble / enrichment class and every student gets to play a solo. Each morning before classes start at 8:30am, there is singing in the hall. This is a great opportunity for everyone at Camp - especially the parents!

There are pre-dinner solo concerts each afternoon and at night even more concerts: Senior Soloists (Thursday & Friday), Concertos (Saturday) and the Music Extravaganza (Sunday). On Wednesday there is a Parent Talk by an inspiring Suzuki teacher.

As well as all the wonderful music making, there’s also a pool, tennis courts and plenty of open space – so bring your bike and helmets!

Amelia Giles will lead our Camp Chorus (after breakfast) and Enrichment classes. These are for junior and intermediate piano students, and for those string students, including twinklers/pre-twinklers, who have not yet reached the level for ensemble playing. Enrichment classes are also available for non-playing siblings (refer to prices page).

Amelia is from St Cuthbert’s College in Auckland where she is a full-time classroom music specialist, string specialist, and orchestra, choir, and chamber ensemble director.

Senior piano students will be playing duets as their enrichment activity. Most string players will be in ensembles.

Extra classes

This year we are offering the following three additional classes for older students. Due to the standard program already being quite full, it is only possible for older students to choose ONE of the following three extra classes:

Viola for Violinists

We are again offering a class called Viola for Violinists - four hours of group classes! As well as being a beautiful solo instrument in its own right, the viola is the essential middle voice in string quartets and string orchestras, and will give our young musicians an important new skill. The requirements are that the student must be in Book 4 or above and must be playing a full size violin. Instruments can be provided.

The class will be taught by Professor Donald Maurice, New Zealand School of Music viola teacher and proud Suzuki dad. Donald brings a wealth of performance and teaching experience to this project, and we are extremely fortunate to have him on our faculty!

Fees: $40.00, Minimum enrolment: 4, Maximum: 10

Baroque Style Class

In this additional option, a baroque orchestral work will be the focus of learning about baroque style. This option is for Violin / Viola students (Book 7+) and Cello students (Book 6+). This will be run as an ensemble class and directed by the Baroque violinist Graham McPhail (Director of NZ Barok).

Fees: $40.00

Introductory Suzuki Teacher Training Course for Teenage Violinists

This course is designed to help teenagers approach Suzuki teaching in an organized and informed fashion. The course consists of 8 hours of teaching to include Pedagogy (teaching points) and Philosophy. Stacey Shuck will take the course. The number of participants will be limited. Priority will be given to advanced (beyond completion of the Bach A minor violin concerto) Year 12 and 13 students.

Fees: $80.00, Minimum enrolment: 6, Maximum enrolment: 12

On site accommodation is available in the school hostels, or camping on the school fields if you wish to bring a tent or caravan. There are two hostels, each with a number of wings. Each wing has a combination of a small number of closed rooms, and the remainder of beds in the wing divided up by side partitions and open to the corridor. Please note that Rathkeale is a boys’ boarding school with 2-bed cubicles, so hostel accommodation is much less private than at a girls’ school.

You may choose to have breakfast, lunch, and dinner meals in the School Dining Room. Each meal must be selected and ordered on the registration form. A self-catering option is available; there are two common rooms with small kitchenettes.

No Changing of Meal Orders

This year we will not be able to change meal orders, so please be careful with what you order. If you are having extra people come to camp for the weekend, please think carefully about this and order meals for them at the time you register. If meals have not been pre-ordered you will need to make your own food arrangements.

Off-Site fee

There is an off-site Facilities fee for camp participant families who do not book hostel or tent accommodation. This covers camp administration and use of amenities. Fees must be paid at time of online enrolment.

Visitors and Teacher Observers

The Wellington Branch encourages extended family, friends and teachers to come visit our events – especially Workshop and Camp. There is no charge for visitors as the tutor and venue costs have already been paid for by participants.

Camp Arrival and Departure

Registration will commence at 1pm on Wednesday. Camp concludes at around midday on Monday (Wellington Anniversary) after the Play-out. Please note: Lunch will not be available on the Wednesday, but will be available on the Monday.

Participation in the Masterton Summer Camp is undertaken at your own risk. To the extent allowed by law, the Camp organisers will not be liable for any damages resulting from, or in any way connected to the Camp.
